HIGH AND MIGHTY (The dangerous rise of the SUV) by Keith Bradsher c.2003 published by Public Affairs Books (www.publicaffairsbooks.com) ISBN 1-58648-203-3 $14 in paperback In what is likely the most comprehensive look at the historical, economic, sociological, psychological, and engineering aspects of this class of vehicle ever written, author Bradsher leaves virtually no stone unturned, citing numerous inside industry and government sources. Assisted originally by benign government regulatory neglect, and eventually by out-and-out protectionism, US automakers skillfully (and profitably) were able to conceive and supply a relatively non-existant transportation need while ignoring numerous safety, engineering, and air quality issues, causing the needless deaths of thousands of motorists in the US and abroad. This book should be required reading for anyone contemplating purchasing an SUV, and is highly recommended for those in the accident reconstruction and investigation fields.
