In an effort to get some travel times for young children a study was conducted in August of 1985 at a local pre-school. The PDF file shows the results for both Females and Males.

Some explanations -

I tried to get ages to Year and Month, however, in some cases all I was told was "This is the 5 year old class", which meant children between 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 years. In which case a 5 was put into the Year column and a "? +/- 6" was put into the month column.

The "2nd 24 foot" column is looking at the time or speed for the child to cover the second 24 feet in the 48 foot total distance. In other words, what is the time/speed to run across 24 feet without the cceleration time lag.

Walking speed instructions were to walk at a normal speed as if you were crossing a street with a parent. However, these speeds may (probably are) be considered a "Fast Walk" speed, since to kids of these ages it is a game and a race.

All times were obtained with a stop watch.

Pedestrian acceleration must be accounted for when a pedestrian, from a stopped position, begins to walk or run across a street in front of a vehicle. In the past, most have just gone to the books and obtained an average running speed for a specific age group. This will tend to under estimate the pedestrian movement time before impact.

Many charts have been published showing the 50th and 85th percentiles walking and running times of various groups and ages of people. The charts contain good and valid data. It is the correct use of this data that must be addressed.
